From Toronto Island airport to Union Station, the free airport shuttle from the mainland terminal to 44 York Street takes about 15 minutes, every 15 minutes (25 early and late). The 509 streetcar takes under 15 minutes; walking takes 30–35; a car takes 10–15 off-peak to the Union Station curb. Allow about an hour from landing to a train departure.

Toronto Island airport to Union Station: the options in one table

Getting from Toronto Island airport to Union Station is short in distance, about 2.3 km, but it has more steps than people expect: leaving the aircraft, crossing back to the mainland and then covering the waterfront streets to Front Street. If you are connecting to a VIA train, a GO train or the UP Express, those steps matter more than the distance. Our Union Station car service page explains where cars stop at the station; this post times each option from the moment your wheels touch the runway.

Step one: landing to the mainland pavilion

Before any of the options above begin, you need to reach the mainland. Budget the pieces:

  1. Taxi to the gate and deplaning: five to ten minutes on a small turboprop.
  2. Baggage: none with carry-on only; perhaps 10–20 minutes if you checked a bag.
  3. Canadian customs: only for arrivals from the United States, done on the island before you leave.
  4. Crossing: under six minutes by tunnel, or up to a 15-minute wait plus 90 seconds on the ferry.

So a carry-on traveller on a domestic flight can be on the mainland 15–20 minutes after landing; a US arrival with a checked bag may need 45 minutes or more.

How much time do you need for a train?

Add the two stages together and then add a buffer for finding your platform. Our planning rule for a traveller with carry-on only, arriving on a domestic flight:

TrainSuggested gap from scheduled landingWhy
UP Express to Pearson60 minTrains run about every 15 min, so missing one costs little
GO train60–75 minLower frequency on some lines and at off-peak hours
VIA Rail90 minReserved seats, boarding closes before departure, luggage

With checked bags or a US arrival, add 30 minutes to each. If the gap is shorter, a car to the Front Street curb is the most time-efficient option, and even then it is a risk worth weighing before you buy the ticket.

The free shuttle: best value, with a clock

The airport's complimentary shuttle leaves from in front of the main terminal and tunnel access building on Eireann Quay and runs to 44 York Street, on the west side of the Fairmont Royal York, directly across Front Street from Union. The airport's shuttle page gives about every 15 minutes, about 25 early and late, and around 15 minutes on the road. From the York Street stop, the Front Street doors of Union are a two- to four-minute walk; the VIA concourse and GO concourses are a few minutes more. For a solo traveller with a carry-on, this is the obvious choice. See our post on the shuttle from York Street for the finer points.

The 509 streetcar: underground at the end

The 509 Harbourfront streetcar runs from the Bathurst and Queens Quay West stop, a short walk from the pavilion along Eireann Quay, east along Queens Quay into the tunnel to Union Station. Its advantage for rail passengers is that it ends underground at the Union loop, so you can reach the TTC and railway concourses without going outside, which is welcome in winter. The airport lists it on its public transit page and says it reaches Union in under 15 minutes. You pay a TTC fare, and streetcars can be crowded on summer weekends, so a large suitcase is awkward.

Walking to Union with a carry-on

If the weather is kind and your bag has wheels, the waterfront walk from the pavilion to Union is a pleasant half hour: up Eireann Quay, east along Queens Quay past Harbourfront Centre, left on York Street and north under the Gardiner and the rail corridor to Front Street. We give the full route in can you walk from Union Station to Billy Bishop. For a train connection, walking is the least time-predictable of the options only because of traffic lights; it is, however, immune to gridlock, which makes it surprisingly competitive on event evenings.

Taxi or booked car to the Front Street curb

Taxis load at the corral to the right of the mainland pavilion at the foot of Eireann Quay, and app cars pick up in the finger lanes next to Little Norway Park, according to the airport's pick-up and drop-off page. A booked car tracks your flight, so the chauffeur is nearby when you land and pulls up when you message that you are crossing. At Union, cars use the designated curbside zone on Front Street in front of the main entrance. Off-peak the drive is 10–15 minutes; at rush hour or on a game night it can be 20–30.

Continuing to Pearson by UP Express

Some travellers land at Billy Bishop and fly out of Pearson the same day. The UP Express from Union to Pearson Terminal 1 takes about 25 minutes and runs roughly every 15 minutes, according to UP Express. Shuttle plus UP makes a cheap chain: about 15 minutes to York Street, a short walk to the UP platform at the west end of Union, and 25 minutes to T1. If your onward flight is from Terminal 3, add the free Terminal Link train at Pearson. With bags, children or a tight window, a direct car from Eireann Quay to Pearson avoids two changes; see Pearson to Billy Bishop for the timing in both directions.

Continuing by GO or VIA

Union is the hub for GO Transit's regional trains and buses and for VIA Rail's Corridor trains to Ottawa, Montreal, Kingston, London, Windsor and Niagara Falls. Check your train on VIA Rail or GO Transit while you are still on the island, because platform assignments and delays are posted in real time. VIA passengers usually wait near the Great Hall; GO riders use the Bay and York concourses. If you have heavy bags and a VIA reservation, a car to the Front Street doors puts you closest to the VIA side.

Three real scenarios

  • Consultant, carry-on, 6:40 p.m. VIA to Ottawa, landing at 5:05 p.m. from Montreal: shuttle to York Street, a short walk, boarding with time for a coffee.
  • Family of four, two checked bags, a GO train home to Oakville: a booked SUV to the Front Street curb; or, often simpler, the same SUV straight home, which removes the train entirely.
  • Student, one backpack, UP Express to Pearson for a flight home: walk or streetcar to Union, then UP; the cheapest chain that works.

Winter and weather on the connection

Two kinds of weather affect this short trip. The first is on the lake: fog and strong wind delay turboprop arrivals at Billy Bishop more often than long-haul flights at Pearson, which can squeeze a train connection you planned carefully. Watch the flight status before you board and, if the delay eats your buffer, contact your rail operator about changing the ticket before you land. The second is on the street: snow, slush and wind make the walk and the wait for a shuttle unpleasant, and the streetcar's underground finish at Union becomes a real advantage. A booked car tracks the flight and adjusts automatically, so a late landing does not cost waiting time within the included window. Check the federal weather site the day before.

Children, luggage and older travellers

The shuttle and the streetcar are fine for most adults, less so for a parent with a toddler, a car seat and two suitcases, or an elderly relative who tires on long station corridors. Union is a large building; from the Front Street doors to some GO platforms is a real walk. A car to the Front Street curb shortens the distance, and with meet and greet the chauffeur can help with bags into the station. Child seats are fitted on request when you add them at booking, and for wheelchair users, our accessible transfers send a suitable vehicle.

When skipping Union altogether is better

Union is the right answer for a connection, not always for a destination. If you are heading home to Mississauga, Markham or Vaughan, a car straight from Eireann Quay is often quicker than a train that still leaves you a taxi ride from your door. The same applies to hotels in Yorkville or North York. For longer trips, such as Niagara Falls or Kitchener-Waterloo, a car from the island airport avoids crossing downtown to change modes. The reservation engine quotes every destination by address, and our downtown Toronto car service page covers the core.

If you miss the train

It happens: a fog delay on the lake, a slow bag belt, a streetcar diversion. If you miss a UP Express, the next one is usually about 15 minutes behind. If you miss a GO train, check the next departure or the parallel GO bus on the same corridor. A missed VIA train is the costly one, because seats are reserved; contact VIA about the next available train as soon as you know you will be late, ideally before you land. For some destinations, a car can be the rescue: Kitchener, Oakville or Niagara Falls are all reachable by road, and the reservation engine quotes the fare before you commit.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How do I get from Toronto Island airport to Union Station?

Cross from the island to the mainland terminal on Eireann Quay, then take the free airport shuttle to 44 York Street across from Union (about 15 minutes), the 509 Harbourfront streetcar to the Union loop (under 15 minutes), a taxi or booked car to the Front Street curb (10–15 minutes off-peak), or walk along the waterfront (30–35 minutes).

Is there a free shuttle from Billy Bishop to Union Station?

Yes. The airport's complimentary shuttle runs from in front of the mainland terminal to 44 York Street, on the west side of the Fairmont Royal York, directly across Front Street from Union Station. It runs about every 15 minutes, about every 25 early and late, and the ride takes roughly 15 minutes.

How long does it take from Billy Bishop to Union Station?

Allow 30–45 minutes from landing for a carry-on traveller on a domestic flight: 15–20 minutes to deplane and cross to the mainland, then 10–25 minutes by shuttle, streetcar or car. With a checked bag or an arrival from the United States, which clears Canadian customs on the island, add 20–30 minutes.

Can I catch a VIA train at Union after landing at Billy Bishop?

Yes, with enough time. We suggest at least 90 minutes between scheduled landing and a VIA departure for a carry-on traveller on a domestic flight, and two hours with checked bags or a US arrival. VIA has reserved seats and closes boarding before departure, so a tighter connection is a gamble.

What is the fastest way from Billy Bishop to Union Station?

Off-peak, a car or taxi from the mainland terminal is usually fastest, at 10–15 minutes to the Front Street curb. At rush hour or on event nights, the 509 streetcar or even walking can match it, because they avoid gridlocked streets. The free shuttle is close behind and costs nothing.

Can I get from Billy Bishop to Pearson by train?

Not directly. The usual chain is the free shuttle or 509 streetcar to Union Station, then the UP Express to Pearson Terminal 1, which takes about 25 minutes and runs roughly every 15 minutes. For Terminal 3, add the Terminal Link train. A direct car between the airports takes 30–40 minutes off-peak.
