A private chauffeur from Toronto to Montreal drives about 540 km on Highway 401 and Quebec's A-20 and takes 5.5 to 6.5 hours door to door, including a stop. TorontoAirportTransfer.services quotes a fixed all-in fare before you confirm; the planning figure is $1,275–1,470 in a business sedan, plus HST, with fuel, tolls and gratuity included. The car can also go to Montreal-Trudeau (YUL).

Toronto to Montreal chauffeur: what the trip looks like

The Toronto to Montreal chauffeur run is the classic Canadian business corridor by road. Your chauffeur collects you at your home, office or hotel in the GTA, or at Pearson or Billy Bishop after a flight, and takes the 401 east past Oshawa, Belleville, Kingston and Cornwall. At the Ontario–Quebec line the 401 becomes Autoroute 20, which runs into the island of Montreal and toward downtown.

There is no station to reach and no connection to make. Many of our clients book this route because they want to work in the car for five hours rather than fight their way through two airports for a one-hour flight. Others are moving a student to McGill or Concordia, travelling with a parent who dislikes flying, or carrying samples, displays or luggage that would never fit airline rules. The long distance car service page covers how we plan every multi-hour run.

Planning fares: Toronto to Montreal by chauffeured car

These are planning figures for one way from central Toronto to central Montreal. The reservation engine quotes your exact addresses, date and vehicle.

VehiclePassengers / bagsOne way, all-in (planning figure)
Business sedan3 / 3$1,275–1,470
First-class sedan (S-Class / 7 Series)3 / 3about $1,915–2,205
Executive SUV6 / 6about $1,600–1,915
Luxury van6 / 6about $1,600–1,915
Sprinter van14 / 14about $2,805–3,235

HST is shown on its own line. The fare covers the chauffeur, vehicle, fuel, any 407 ETR tolls if the chauffeur uses it to clear the GTA, and gratuity. A one-way price includes the chauffeur's return drive; if you are coming back the same day or the next, ask dispatch to price a return with the car waiting, which is usually better value than two separate one-ways.

Working in the car: the executive's case

For a lot of our corporate clients the point of the car is the five hours. The rear seat of a first-class sedan or an executive SUV is a quiet, private office. You can take calls without being overheard, work on a laptop with the seat reclined, or sleep after an early flight. The chauffeur does not start conversations and keeps the cabin temperature where you want it.

Mobile coverage along the 401 is generally good, with a few weaker patches in eastern Ontario, so download anything large before you leave. Bring your own laptop charger; the cars have USB ports and most have 12-volt outlets. If you need a table and room to spread papers, the Sprinter's rear lounge layout is the better choice. Our corporate car service sets up accounts for companies that book this route regularly, with monthly invoicing.

Timings and traffic on the 401

The 401 through the GTA is the slow part. Leaving downtown Toronto at 7 a.m. on a weekday you meet the inbound rush in the opposite direction but heavy traffic around Pickering and Ajax; leaving at 9:30 a.m., after the peak, is often faster overall.

LegTypical time
Downtown Toronto to Oshawa (401 or 407 east)45 min – 1 h 15 min
Oshawa to Kingston2 h – 2 h 15 min
Kingston to the Quebec line1 h 45 min – 2 h
Quebec line to downtown Montreal (A-20)45 min – 1 h 30 min
One stop for fuel and food20 – 40 min

Montreal's own traffic is the wild card. Construction on the island's approaches and bridges is frequent, and a Friday afternoon arrival can take an hour from the Quebec line. Dispatch checks the Ontario 511 service and Quebec traffic information before departure and plans around closures.

Stops on the Toronto to Montreal drive

Most clients stop once, roughly halfway. The 401 has ONroute service centres with fuel, washrooms and food along the way, and Kingston is the natural midpoint if you want a proper meal or a short walk by the water. Some clients build in a meeting in Kingston or Belleville and continue afterwards; the car waits, and waiting time is priced into the fare when you book it that way.

If you are travelling with children, a pet or anyone who needs more frequent breaks, say so at booking. The chauffeur takes their own legal rest breaks on a route of this length and plans them with the stops you want, so nobody is stopping twice.

Toronto to Montreal: chauffeur vs VIA Rail

The train is the main alternative and it is a good one. VIA Rail runs several trains a day between Union Station and Montréal Gare Centrale, taking roughly five hours, with some faster departures and stops at Kingston and at Dorval near the Montreal airport. Business class includes a meal and a quiet car with Wi-Fi.

The train makes sense for one or two people going centre to centre. The car makes sense when you are not starting or ending near a station: a home in Oakville or Markham, a hotel in the West Island, a university residence, or a client in Laval. With the train you still need a ride to Union Station and another from Gare Centrale, and you work to the timetable. For three or more travellers, the car's fare divided per person is often comparable to business-class train tickets, and it leaves when you are ready. Our Union Station page covers transfers to the train if you choose rail.

The train is a good centre-to-centre option; the car wins from door to door

Toronto to Montreal: chauffeur vs flying

Air Canada and Porter fly between Toronto and Montreal frequently; Porter from Billy Bishop on the Toronto Island, and Air Canada from both Pearson and Billy Bishop. The flight itself is just over an hour. But add the drive to the airport, security, boarding, taxiing, the walk from the gate and the ride from Montreal-Trudeau into the city, and the door-to-door time is often three and a half to four hours, with little usable working time.

The car takes longer but gives you five uninterrupted hours and no baggage limits. For a morning meeting in Montreal, flying the night before or taking a dawn flight is usually more practical. For an afternoon of work followed by an evening in Montreal, the car is often the better day. If you do fly, we handle both ends of the Toronto side: see our Billy Bishop transfer service for Island flights.

Toronto to Montreal-Trudeau airport (YUL)

Some clients drive to Montreal-Trudeau rather than into the city, usually to catch an international flight that is better priced or more direct from YUL, or because they are connecting from a cruise or event in eastern Ontario. YUL is in Dorval, on the western side of the island of Montreal, so the car avoids the downtown traffic and the drive is typically 20 to 30 minutes shorter than the run into downtown.

For an international flight, plan to be at the terminal three hours before departure and leave Toronto at least nine hours before the flight. Our Montreal airport page has more on the YUL end, and the airport's own site lists airlines and terminal information.

Language and arriving in Quebec

French is the official language in Quebec and road signs switch to French at the provincial line: "Sortie" for exit, "Est" and "Ouest" for east and west. Your chauffeur knows the route and the downtown streets, so none of this is a problem, but it helps to have your destination address written exactly as the hotel or office gives it.

Downtown Montreal has many one-way streets and frequent construction. Hotels in Old Montreal can be on narrow cobbled streets with limited stopping space; the chauffeur will get you as close to the door as the street allows and carry bags to the entrance. For a stay in the city with local driving, ask dispatch; local hourly work in Montreal is arranged through network affiliates to the same standard.

Moving students to McGill and Concordia

Late August and early January are moving weeks for students heading to Montreal's universities, and the car is often the easiest way to do it. A family can load a term's worth of clothes, a desk lamp, a small fridge and a bicycle in the back of an executive SUV or luxury van and unload at the residence door, without shipping boxes or paying airline bag fees. Residence move-in days are busy, with timed arrival slots and crowded streets around the campuses, so give us the slot you have been allocated and we will time the departure from Toronto to meet it. For the trip home at the end of term, the same car can collect the student and the boxes. Tell us about bulky items when you book so dispatch assigns a vehicle with enough room.

Choosing the vehicle for the Montreal run

For one or two travellers who want to work, the first-class sedan gives the quietest ride. A business sedan is perfectly comfortable for most people. Families with luggage, and anyone moving a student with boxes and a bicycle, should book the executive SUV or the luxury van for the space.

Company offsites, sports teams and wedding parties travelling to Montreal book the Sprinter, which seats 14 with room for bags. Groups larger than that, needing a coach, are priced in writing by a coordinator and fulfilled through vetted partner operators. Child seats are available on request and added at booking; tell us each child's age and weight.

Winter on the Toronto to Montreal corridor

The 401 between Kingston and the Quebec line is exposed and can get heavy snow squalls off Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence. All cars on the route are on winter tires from late fall, and dispatch checks the Environment Canada forecast before long-distance departures.

In a serious storm we will call you to suggest moving the departure earlier or later, and we will not send a car into closed highways. If we cannot run the trip for safety reasons, you are not charged. On most winter days the drive runs as normal with an extra 30 to 60 minutes allowed.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How long does it take to drive from Toronto to Montreal?

The drive is about 540 km, mostly on Highway 401 and then Quebec's A-20. With one stop for fuel and food, a private car usually takes 5.5 to 6.5 hours door to door. GTA traffic at the start and Montreal's construction and bridges at the end are the main variables; leaving after the morning rush often helps.

How much is a chauffeur from Toronto to Montreal?

Planning figures are $1,275–1,470 one way in a business sedan, plus HST, all-in: chauffeur, vehicle, fuel, tolls and gratuity. A first-class sedan is roughly 50 per cent more and an executive SUV about 25–30 per cent more. The reservation engine gives the exact fixed fare for your addresses and date before you book.

Is it better to take the train or a private car to Montreal?

VIA Rail is a good choice for one or two travellers going centre to centre, taking roughly five hours from Union Station to Gare Centrale. A private car is better if you start or end away from the stations, travel with a lot of luggage, or are three or more people, when the per-person cost can be comparable and you leave when you choose.

Can I work in the car on the way to Montreal?

Yes, and many clients book the car for exactly that. The rear seat is private and quiet, and mobile coverage on the 401 is generally good with a few weaker stretches in eastern Ontario. Bring your laptop charger. For spreading out papers or working with a colleague, a Sprinter with a rear lounge layout gives more space.

Can you drive me from Toronto to Montreal airport?

Yes. We drive directly to Montreal-Trudeau (YUL) in Dorval, which is on the western side of the island, so the drive is usually a little shorter than going downtown. For an international flight, allow at least nine hours from your Toronto pickup to departure, with three hours at the airport.

Do you stop in Kingston on the way to Montreal?

We can. Kingston is the natural midpoint and many clients stop there for lunch. Some book a meeting in Kingston or Belleville and have the car wait; that waiting time is included in the fixed fare when you book it that way. Tell us your stop plans at booking.

Do you offer a return from Montreal to Toronto?

Yes. Book the return with your Montreal address or flight details. If you are returning within a day, ask dispatch to price the car staying with you; for longer stays two one-way bookings are usually better value. The same cancellation policy applies to each leg.
