Flying London Heathrow to Toronto Pearson takes roughly eight hours westbound. Air Canada (Terminal 1), British Airways and Virgin Atlantic (typically Terminal 3) fly it non-stop. British citizens need an eTA before boarding. A pre-booked TorontoAirportTransfer.services chauffeur tracks your flight, waits 60 minutes free after landing, and charges a fixed fare, roughly $130–160 to downtown in a business sedan, plus HST.
London Heathrow to Toronto Pearson: the route at a glance
Heathrow to Pearson is one of the busiest transatlantic city pairs into Canada, and it is flown non-stop every day. The flight covers about 5,700 km and the scheduled block time westbound is usually a little over eight hours, because you are flying into the prevailing jet stream; the return to London is shorter. Three airlines currently fly it non-stop: Air Canada, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, with Air Canada operating the most frequencies. Schedules change by season, so treat any timetable you read online as a guide and trust the booking in your airline app. For us, the flight number is the key detail: give it at booking and the dispatcher follows that aircraft from push-back at Heathrow to its gate at Pearson.
Which Pearson terminal will you land at?
This matters more than most travellers expect, because the chauffeur waits at the commercial pickup area of the terminal where you actually clear customs. Air Canada, a Star Alliance carrier, arrives at Terminal 1. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic typically use Terminal 3, as do most oneworld and SkyTeam airlines. Codeshares cause the confusion: a ticket sold as British Airways but operated by another airline lands wherever the operating carrier parks. Check the operating airline on your boarding pass, then confirm with our Pearson terminal finder. If you are unsure, just give us the flight number; dispatch matches it against the live arrivals board on Toronto Pearson's website and sets the terminal automatically.
Typical arrival times and the five-hour clock change
Most Heathrow departures leave London between late morning and mid-afternoon, which puts the bulk of arrivals into Pearson between early afternoon and early evening Toronto time. That is convenient for sleep, less convenient for traffic: a 4:30 pm landing on a weekday means your drive into the city meets the 427 and Gardiner at their slowest. Toronto is five hours behind the UK for most of the year. For a few weeks in March, and for one week around the end of October, the gap drops to four hours because Europe and North America change their clocks on different Sundays. If you are booking a meeting on your first evening, double-check which week you are in before promising a time.
Jet lag after a Heathrow flight: planning the first 24 hours
Flying west is the gentler direction. You gain five hours, so a 3 pm landing feels like 8 pm to your body, and the usual advice is to stay up until at least 9 or 10 pm local time. From the car's point of view, that means the ride into town is a good time to rest rather than a good time to take a call. Our chauffeurs keep the cabin quiet unless you start the conversation, and bottled water is in the car. If you are arriving for business the next morning, consider a hotel close to your meeting rather than one close to the airport, so the next day starts without a commute.

Entry requirements for British citizens: the eTA
British citizens are visa-exempt for Canada but need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to board a flight to Pearson. It costs CAN$7, is applied for online and is linked electronically to the passport you apply with. Apply only through the Government of Canada's official eTA page; many look-alike sites charge extra. The eTA is generally valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, so if you renewed your passport since your last trip you need a new one. Holders of other passports who live in the UK should check their own nationality's rules. Canadian citizens, including dual British-Canadians, must travel on a Canadian passport rather than an eTA.
Customs at Pearson: kiosks, eGates and Advance Declaration
After you leave the aircraft, follow signs for Customs and Immigration. At Pearson, arriving passengers make their declaration at self-serve kiosks or eGates in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, then speak to a border services officer if needed. The CBSA explains how the kiosks and eGates work. You can save a step by submitting the Advance Declaration through ArriveCAN up to 72 hours before landing; it is optional, but users can follow dedicated express lanes. Declare food honestly: British cheese, meat products and fresh fruit all have rules, and declaring is never a problem, while failing to declare can be. Our arriving in Canada at Pearson guide walks through the hall step by step.
Your 60 minutes of included waiting
Every international pickup includes 60 minutes of waiting from the actual landing time, not the scheduled time. A Heathrow flight that lands 40 minutes early or 50 minutes late changes nothing for you, because the dispatcher re-times the chauffeur as the aircraft moves. Sixty minutes covers most arrivals: taxi to the gate, the walk, the kiosk, the officer and the carousel. On heavy afternoons, when several European and Asian flights land together, the hall can take longer. If you are still inside when the hour runs out, you are not abandoned; the chauffeur stays and further time is charged in 15-minute blocks. A quick text once you have your bags lets the chauffeur bring the car forward.
Where your chauffeur meets you
The fare includes curbside pickup at the terminal's pre-arranged commercial pickup area, which is outside the arrivals level and separate from the taxi stand and the rideshare zones. Once you have your bags, you message the chauffeur or dispatch, walk out, and the car pulls up within a few minutes. The exact door and signage differ between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3; your confirmation spells them out, and our Pearson pickup rules guide shows both. The chauffeur is not inside the terminal by default. That is a deliberate choice: it keeps the fare low for travellers who are happy to walk out, and it lets those who want a face at the barrier pay only for that.
Meet and greet inside the arrivals hall
If you want someone waiting at the exit with your name on a board, add airport meet and greet at booking; the planning figure is $25–35. The chauffeur parks, waits in the public arrivals area where passengers exit customs, and walks you and your trolley to the car. It suits first-time visitors, older parents flying out to see family, anyone travelling with small children, and executives who want a smooth handover rather than a phone call in a noisy hall. After an eight-hour flight from Heathrow with a connection in London from elsewhere, many travellers decide the extra few dollars is money well spent.

Choosing a vehicle for a transatlantic suitcase load
Long-haul travellers pack differently from commuters. Two people on a two-week holiday often bring two large cases, two carry-ons and a duty-free bag, which fills a business sedan's boot. A family of four with that kind of luggage belongs in an executive SUV or luxury van, not squeezed into a sedan. Golf bags, prams and ski bags all change the answer. When you book, count bags rather than people and choose the class that fits both. Whatever the exemptions for taxis and buses, we fit the right child seat for every child who needs one.
Where visitors from the UK usually stay
British visitors split into clear groups. Business travellers head for the Financial District, King West and the hotels around Union Station, where the drive from Pearson is 30 to 50 minutes depending on the hour. Holiday travellers often choose Yorkville for shopping and restaurants, or the waterfront for the lake views. A large share of Heathrow passengers are visiting family: the UK has sent generations of emigrants to Ontario, and many of those relatives live in Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, Brampton and Durham Region rather than downtown. Those trips are often shorter and cheaper from Pearson. If you are staying with family in the suburbs and heading into the city later, a separate Pearson to downtown Toronto booking can come later in the week.
Onward trips: Niagara, Muskoka and Ottawa
Many UK itineraries continue beyond Toronto. Niagara Falls is the classic first day trip, about 90 minutes to two hours by road, and you can go straight from the aircraft using our Pearson to Niagara Falls transfer before the jet lag hits; Niagara Parks publishes the attractions and seasonal hours. Muskoka, the cottage country two to three hours north, is popular in summer and autumn colour season; see the Toronto to Muskoka route. Ottawa is about four and a half to five hours by car, and some visitors prefer a chauffeur to VIA Rail when they have heavy luggage or want stops along the way. Each of these is a fixed-fare booking in the same engine.
The return leg: getting back to Pearson for your Heathrow flight
For the flight home, plan to be at the terminal about three hours before departure; our guide on how early to arrive at Pearson explains the reasoning. Transatlantic evening departures leave Toronto into the late-afternoon rush, and the 401 and 427 are unforgiving between 3:30 and 6:30 pm. From downtown, allow 45 to 70 minutes at that hour instead of the 30 you would need at midday. Book the return when you book the arrival so the same fare logic applies, and give us the airline so the chauffeur drops you at the right terminal. If the trip is Air Canada, that is Terminal 1; British Airways and Virgin passengers usually depart from Terminal 3.
Money, phones and plugs: small differences from home
Canada uses the Canadian dollar and card payment is almost universal, including tap payment, so most UK visitors need very little cash. Your fare with us is paid when you book, so nothing changes hands in the car. For data, a travel eSIM or a Canadian prepaid SIM is usually cheaper than UK roaming bolt-ons, and Pearson has free Wi-Fi. Canada uses North American plugs and 120 volts, so bring a UK-to-North-America adaptor. Traffic drives on the right, distances are in kilometres, and the speed limits on the 400-series highways are posted in kilometres per hour, which confuses some British drivers renting cars later in their trip.
Tipping in Canada compared with the UK
Tipping expectations in Canada are noticeably higher than in Britain. In restaurants, 15 to 20 per cent before tax is normal and servers rely on it, whereas a 12.5 per cent service charge added to the bill is the UK habit. Taxi and rideshare drivers are usually tipped too. With TorontoAirportTransfer.services the chauffeur's gratuity is already inside the fixed fare, so you do not need to work anything out after a long flight. If a chauffeur goes well beyond the booking, such as helping with an unplanned stop, an extra tip is appreciated but never expected. Our chauffeur tipping and etiquette guide covers the rest.
