The "Porter shuttle" in Toronto is the free Billy Bishop airport shuttle between 44 York Street, beside the Fairmont Royal York across from Union Station, and the mainland terminal on Eireann Quay. It runs about every 15 minutes (25 early and late), takes about 15 minutes, and is open to all passengers. Porter also flies from Pearson Terminal 3, where the shuttle does not go; a Billy Bishop transfer or Pearson car is the alternative.
Porter shuttle Toronto: what the name means today
Search for the Porter shuttle Toronto travellers talk about and you will find two different things tangled together. One is a real, free bus that still runs every day, but it is now the airport's shuttle, not the airline's. The other is an assumption: that because Porter has a shuttle, every Porter flight must leave from the island. Neither is quite right any more, and the gap between them is how people end up at the wrong airport. This post untangles both, gives the shuttle's current stops and rhythm, and sets out the alternatives, including the Billy Bishop airport transfer and cars for Porter's Pearson flights.
Why it is called the Porter shuttle
When Porter Airlines built its business at Billy Bishop, it ran a shuttle for its own passengers between downtown and the island airport's mainland terminal. For years the downtown stop was beside the SkyWalk near Union Station, and the buses carried the airline's branding. The service later moved to York Street, and the airport now presents it as a complimentary shuttle for anyone travelling to Billy Bishop, including Air Canada passengers, according to the airport's shuttle page. The old name stuck because a generation of Toronto business travellers learned it that way. If a friend tells you to catch the Porter shuttle, this is the bus they mean.
Current stops and schedule
- Downtown stop: 44 York Street, on the west side of the Fairmont Royal York, at Front and York, across Front Street from Union Station.
- Airport stop: in front of the main terminal and passenger tunnel access building, 2 Eireann Quay, on the mainland.
- Frequency: about every 15 minutes on a bump-and-go basis; about every 25 minutes early in the morning and late at night.
- Ride time: about 15 minutes, depending on traffic.
- Cost: free, with free on-board Wi-Fi.
There is no printed minute-by-minute timetable to download; the airport describes frequencies rather than fixed departures. The practical detail of finding the York Street stop from each part of Union is in our York Street shuttle guide.

First check: which Toronto airport is your Porter flight from?
This is the most important sentence in this post. Porter operates from Billy Bishop (YTZ) on the Toronto Island and also from Toronto Pearson (YYZ), where its flights use Terminal 3. The two airports are about 30–40 minutes apart by car off-peak and far more at rush hour, and there is no train between them. Look at the three-letter code on your booking: YTZ means the island; YYZ means Pearson. The shuttle from York Street only goes to YTZ. Our dispatchers take calls every month from Porter passengers who went to the wrong airport, and the fix is always expensive in time. Use our terminal finder for Pearson flights.
Porter from Billy Bishop: shuttle or car?
For a Porter flight from the island, the shuttle is excellent if you are near Union, travelling light and not flying at the crack of dawn. A car earns its fare in these cases:
- You are staying outside the core: Yorkville, Liberty Village, North York, Etobicoke, Mississauga.
- You have checked bags, sports equipment or a stroller.
- Children need car seats, which we fit on request when added at booking.
- Your flight is among the first of the morning, when the shuttle runs less often.
- It is raining, snowing or bitterly windy at York Street.
From Pearson to Billy Bishop, the planning figure is $145–175 in a business sedan, all-in before HST; downtown hops are quoted by address.
Porter from Pearson: getting to Terminal 3
If your Porter flight is from Pearson, forget the York Street shuttle. The options into Terminal 3 are different: the UP Express from Union Station to Terminal 1 in about 25 minutes, then the free Terminal Link train to Terminal 3; TTC airport buses, including the 900 Airport Express from Kipling station, listed on the TTC airport page; taxis and app cars; or a pre-booked car to the Terminal 3 departures curb. A car avoids the Terminal Link change entirely. From downtown our planning figure is $130–160 in a business sedan, all-in before HST; see the flat-rate airport car for fares from across the GTA.
Alternatives to the shuttle, compared
| Your Porter flight | Cheapest | Easiest with bags | Our planning figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| From Billy Bishop, starting near Union | Free shuttle or walk | Booked car to Eireann Quay | Downtown hop, quoted by address |
| From Billy Bishop, starting at Pearson | UP Express to Union, then shuttle | Direct car, 30–40 min off-peak | $145–175 sedan |
| From Pearson T3, starting downtown | UP Express plus Terminal Link | Car to the T3 curb | $130–160 sedan |
| From Pearson T3, starting in Mississauga | TTC or MiWay bus | Car to the T3 curb | $90–120 sedan |
All car fares are all-in including gratuity, with HST added; the reservation engine quotes the exact address and time.
Connecting between Porter's two Toronto airports
Porter's network means some travellers land at one Toronto airport and leave from the other, for example arriving at Pearson and continuing from the island. On separate tickets, allow at least three and a half to four hours between flights: customs and bags, the drive, the crossing and security all take time. On a single booking, check what the airline says about the connection. By public transport the chain is UP Express to Union, a short walk to York Street and the shuttle to Eireann Quay, which works with light bags. By car it is one step; our Pearson to Billy Bishop route shows timings by time of day.

Early mornings and late nights
The shuttle's quieter hours are when it can let you down. Early and late, it runs about every 25 minutes rather than 15, which matters before a first-wave departure or after a delayed evening arrival. The airport itself operates from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., and the ferry runs about every 15 minutes from roughly 5:15 a.m. to just after midnight, according to its ferry page; the tunnel is open during airport hours. For a 6:30 a.m. Porter flight, a car booked for about 5:30 a.m. from a downtown hotel takes the timing out of the shuttle's hands. The fare is the same at 5 a.m. as at noon.
Arriving on Porter: getting from the island
Coming back, the same shuttle runs from the mainland terminal to York Street, a few minutes' walk from Union's trains. Taxis load at the corral to the right of the mainland pavilion, and app cars use the finger lanes beside Little Norway Park. A booked car tracks your Porter flight, and the chauffeur pulls up when you message that you are crossing; 30 minutes of waiting is included on Canadian and US arrivals and on flights from the United States, from actual landing. For trains, read Toronto Island airport to Union Station.
Groups, teams and corporate travel
Porter is popular with companies that fly staff between Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. For a team of six heading to the island for a morning flight, one executive SUV or luxury van from the office is usually easier than six people converging on York Street, and for fourteen, a Sprinter moves everyone and their bags in one trip. Tell dispatch in advance, so the chauffeur plans a stop on Eireann Quay that suits a larger vehicle. Corporate accounts put every leg on one monthly invoice; see corporate car service.
Flying Porter to the United States from the island
Porter's transborder flights from Billy Bishop, to cities such as Newark, Boston, Chicago and Washington, now clear US customs before departure through the preclearance facility that opened at the airport in March 2026. That adds a step on the island, so allow more time than for a flight to Ottawa or Montreal: we suggest being at the Eireann Quay curb about 90 minutes before a US departure, whichever way you get there. On the shuttle, that means catching a bus earlier than feels necessary, particularly in the early-morning window when buses run about every 25 minutes. The airport's preclearance page lists the documents you need.
Weather days on the island
Billy Bishop sits on the lake, and fog or strong wind can delay or divert Porter's turboprops more often than jets at Pearson. On bad-weather days, check your flight status before leaving for the shuttle stop, because a delay of an hour makes a cold wait at York Street pointless. If your flight is moved to Pearson, the shuttle is no help at all; call dispatch and a booked car is re-routed to the new airport with the fare adjusted to the new route. Winter also makes the outdoor wait at the downtown stop harder on children and older travellers; the federal weather site has the forecast.
Mistakes we see with the Porter shuttle
- Going to York Street for a Porter flight that leaves from Pearson.
- Using an old address beside the SkyWalk or on Station Street.
- Expecting the shuttle to run every 15 minutes at 5:30 a.m.
- Thinking the shuttle crosses to the island; you still take the tunnel or ferry.
- Leaving too little time for a US flight now that preclearance is done on the island.
