How early to arrive at Pearson depends on where you fly. Toronto Pearson's general advice is about 90 minutes before a flight within Canada, rising to 2 hours at busy times, and 3 hours for flights to the United States and international destinations. Add your drive time from home, and book your chauffeur so you reach the curb with those margins intact.
How early to arrive at Pearson: the short version
The rule of thumb from the airport itself is simple: roughly 90 minutes for domestic flights, at least 2 hours in busy periods, and at least 3 hours for US and international departures, with some international travellers allowing up to 4 hours in peak season. Those numbers are measured from the moment you walk into Terminal 1 or Terminal 3, not from the moment you leave the house. The live Toronto Pearson website also publishes current wait times, and your airline's own check-in and bag-drop deadline always wins if it is stricter. Our dispatchers plan every Pearson airport limo pickup backwards from those numbers, then add the drive and a weather margin, so the time on your confirmation already reflects all three.
Domestic flights: 90 minutes, 2 hours at peak
A flight to Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal or Halifax only needs check-in, bag drop and one CATSA security screening. On a quiet Tuesday afternoon that can take 20 minutes; on the Friday before a long weekend it can take well over an hour. Our advice is to aim for 2 hours whenever you have checked bags, travel with children, or fly between 5 and 9 am, when the first wave of departures hits both terminals at once. If you only have a carry-on and have checked in on the app, 90 minutes is realistic outside peak periods. Remember that bag-drop counters close before the gate does, typically 45 to 60 minutes before departure for domestic flights depending on the airline, and a missed bag drop means a missed flight even if you are standing in the terminal.
US flights: 3 hours because of preclearance
Flights from Pearson to the United States are unusual: you clear US Customs and Border Protection in Toronto before you board, so you arrive in the US as a domestic passenger. That convenience costs time on this side. After check-in and CATSA screening you queue for US preclearance, which may include a kiosk, an officer interview and sometimes a secondary inspection. That is why the airport recommends 3 hours for US flights at busy times. NEXUS members (see the CBSA NEXUS page) move much faster, but we still schedule at least 2 hours for them because a bag drop queue or a slow security lane can erase the advantage. Early-morning US departures are the busiest bank of the day.
International flights: 3 to 4 hours
Long-haul departures to Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America leave largely in the evening, and many share check-in halls with large family groups carrying several bags each. Three hours is the sensible minimum. Four hours is wise in March Break, late June, the weeks around Christmas and New Year, and on Friday evenings in summer, when charter and leisure carriers push big aircraft out within the same two-hour window. Wheelchair assistance, oversized items such as golf bags and ski bags, pets travelling in the cabin and unaccompanied minors all need extra counter time, so add 30 minutes for any of them. If you are connecting onward from Pearson, the airline sets the minimum connection time, not us.

What actually takes the time at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3
The four time sinks are the drive, check-in and bag drop, CATSA security, and, for US flights, preclearance. The drive is the one we control; our chauffeurs watch live traffic on the 401, 427, 409, 410 and QEW and re-route before you notice. Check-in is the least predictable: one closed counter can double a queue. CATSA screening is quickest when you are ready, which means liquids of 100 ml or less in a single clear resealable bag of up to 1 litre, laptops accessible and pockets emptied before the tray. The CATSA liquids rules apply to every departure from Canada. Finally, the walk to some gates is long; allow 10 to 15 minutes from security to the far piers at both terminals.
Terminal matters: know yours before you book
Air Canada and most Star Alliance partners use Terminal 1; WestJet, Porter and many other carriers use Terminal 3. Some airlines change terminals and codeshares can confuse the picture, so check your booking and use our terminal finder before you confirm. Telling us the terminal lets the chauffeur take the correct ramp off Airport Road or Highway 409 and drop you at the right departures door. If you are unsure, our Terminal 1 vs Terminal 3 guide explains the layout. Being dropped at the wrong terminal is not a disaster, because the free Terminal Link train connects the two, but it can cost 15 to 20 minutes you may not have.
Peak seasons and peak days at Pearson
Pearson has predictable crunch periods. March Break in mid-March is the heaviest week of the winter. The Friday before Victoria Day, Canada Day, the August Civic Holiday, Labour Day and Thanksgiving are all heavy, as are the Sunday and Monday on the way back. From late June through August, summer holiday traffic runs at a steady high. The two weeks around Christmas and New Year combine holiday travel with winter weather. Early morning, between roughly 5 and 8 am, is busy every day of the year because so many aircraft are scheduled to depart before 9 am. On any of these days we add 30 minutes to the pickup time we suggest.
Winter weather and the drive to Pearson
Snow changes everything on the roads, not just at the airport. A 30-minute run from Etobicoke can take an hour when the 427 is reduced to two lanes in a squall, and de-icing can delay departures. We watch Environment Canada forecasts and Ontario 511 road conditions the evening before every early-morning pickup, and if a storm is forecast, dispatch will call to move your pickup earlier. There is no charge for moving a pickup earlier on the same day. Our vehicles run on winter tires from late autumn to spring. If you are flying at 7 am after an overnight snowfall, plan to be collected at least 30 to 45 minutes earlier than the table below suggests.
When your chauffeur should pick you up from each GTA area
The table combines the airport's arrival advice with realistic drive times. Pickup times assume you want to be at the terminal 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before a US or international flight, on a weekday with normal traffic. Use the right-hand column for rush-hour departures and winter mornings. These are planning figures from our dispatch experience, not guarantees; your confirmation shows the exact time.
| Pickup area | Typical drive to Pearson | Domestic: pick up before departure | US / international: pick up before departure |

Downtown and midtown hotels
From downtown hotels the drive depends almost entirely on the Gardiner Expressway and the time of day. At 5 am the run from King and University to Terminal 1 can take 25 minutes. At 4:30 pm on a Thursday the same trip can take 75 minutes, especially if the Gardiner is under construction or there is a Jays game or a concert at the lake. Yorkville and midtown hotels are similar but can use the 401 as an alternative. For a downtown pickup before an evening international flight, we recommend being in the car no later than 4 hours before departure, and our downtown Toronto to Pearson route shows the planning fare of $130–160 in a business sedan.
Suburbs west, north and east
West-end travellers in Mississauga, Etobicoke and Brampton are closest to Pearson and can be picked up later, often 2 hours 30 minutes before a Canadian or US flight. Vaughan and North York use the 400 and 401 or the 407; the 407 ETR adds a toll but often saves 15 minutes in rush hour, and the toll is already inside our all-in fare when the chauffeur uses it. East-end travellers from Scarborough, Markham, Pickering and Ajax face the longest urban run, crossing the whole city on the 401. The express lanes help, but a single collision at the 401 and 404 can add half an hour, so we build that in. See our Mississauga airport limo and Markham airport car service pages for local fares.

Travelling with children, seniors or reduced mobility
Families need more time at every stage: extra bags, a stroller to gate-check, car seats to fold and a bathroom stop before security. Add 30 minutes to the table for children under five. If you need an infant, convertible or booster seat in the car, add it at booking; our chauffeurs install it before arrival (see our child car seat transfers page). Travellers who have requested airline wheelchair assistance should be at the terminal 30 minutes earlier than usual, because assistance is arranged at the check-in counter and the agent then escorts you through security. Our wheelchair accessible transfers can be booked with a ramp-equipped vehicle through partners where a folding chair will not do.
Online check-in, bag-drop and other time savers
Check in online or in the airline app 24 hours before departure, and add your passport details at the same time for international flights. Weigh your bags at home: an overweight bag means repacking at the counter. Keep passports, boarding passes and your phone in one pocket. If you fly often, NEXUS for US trips and airline elite status for priority security lanes both save time. None of these reduce the need to leave on time, but they make the margin you have built much more comfortable. The Pearson wait-time information on torontopearson.com is worth a glance before you leave home.
Returning to Pearson for a very early flight
The first flights leave Pearson at around 6 am, and CATSA screening at both terminals opens in the early hours. For a 6:30 am domestic departure from downtown, a pickup at 3:45 to 4:00 am is typical. For a 7:00 am US flight, we suggest 3:30 am. Chauffeurs arrive 10 to 15 minutes early and message you when they are outside; point-to-point pickups include 15 minutes of waiting. Pack the night before, set two alarms, and leave outdoor lights on so the chauffeur can find the entrance in the dark. We track every booking in dispatch, so if you have not appeared by the pickup time, we call you.
What happens if you are running late
If you are running late, call dispatch rather than hoping to make it up on the road. The chauffeur will not speed, but dispatch can tell you honestly whether you are likely to make bag drop and suggest the terminal door closest to your airline's counters. If you realise the evening before that you need an earlier pickup, change it online or by phone; moving a booking within the same day has no charge. Cancellations follow our sitewide rule: more than 72 hours before pickup costs nothing, 72 hours or less is 10 %, 48 hours or less is 50 %, and 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100 %.
Booking a Pearson ride with the timing built in
When you book, enter your flight number and departure time, and the reservation engine suggests a pickup time using the margins in this guide. You can adjust it, and the fixed all-in fare (chauffeur, vehicle, fuel, 407 tolls if used, airport fees and gratuity included, HST shown separately) does not change with traffic. Compare vehicle sizes on our fleet page and fares on the rates page. For a group, a Sprinter van keeps everyone together and at the same curb at the same time.
