Pearson pickup rules keep the arrivals curb moving. Private drivers wait in the free waiting areas on Network Road (up to 45 minutes), rideshare cars use numbered zones at Terminal 1 Ground Level Doors P to S and Terminal 3 Arrivals Doors B and D, taxis load at the stands, and pre-booked chauffeurs collect passengers at the designated pre-arranged pickup area on the Arrivals curb.

Pearson pickup rules: why nobody may wait at the curb

Toronto Pearson handles tens of millions of passengers a year across two terminals, and the arrivals roads cannot hold cars that sit and wait. The basic rule is that a vehicle at the arrivals curb must be actively loading. Friends and family are expected to wait off-site and drive in only when their passenger is outside with bags, and commercial vehicles follow their own pickup system. Airport staff and enforcement officers move waiting cars along, and repeated stops can mean a ticket. The Toronto Pearson transportation pages set out the current arrangement, which changes from time to time with construction and new zones. This guide explains what each type of ride does, and how a Pearson airport limo booked with TorontoAirportTransfer.services fits into the system.

The Free Waiting Areas (cell phone lots)

Pearson operates two Free Waiting Areas, both on Network Road in Mississauga, a short drive from Terminals 1 and 3. Parking there is free for up to 45 minutes, and the driver must stay with the vehicle the whole time. One of the lots also has fast EV chargers at normal charging rates. The idea is that the person collecting you parks, watches the flight status, and drives to the terminal once you have texted to say you have your bags. It is a good system for friends and family, provided the passenger actually messages at the right moment rather than on landing, because international passengers can take an hour or more to reach the curb.

Where rideshare picks up at Terminal 1

At Terminal 1, rideshare pickups use numbered zones on the Ground Level, between Doors P and S. At the time of writing, Pearson lists Zone 3 at Doors P and Q for Lyft and Hopp, and Zones 4 and 5 at Doors Q to S for Uber. You leave the Arrivals level, follow the ride share signs down to Ground Level and wait at the zone your app shows. The app assigns the exact zone, and assignments shift from time to time, so always trust the app over a sign you remember from a previous trip. Surge pricing applies after large arrival banks, which is one reason travellers compare options in our limo vs Uber vs taxi guide.

Where rideshare picks up at Terminal 3

At Terminal 3, rideshare pickups are on the Arrivals level at Doors B and D, split into several numbered zones for the different apps. Pearson changed the T3 layout recently, so the zone number in your app is what matters. The zones are outdoors on the curb, which is worth remembering in January when you are standing in a cardigan after a flight from the Caribbean. In our experience T3 rideshare can back up in the late evening when several transatlantic and sun flights arrive together; if you have a family and four bags, a pre-booked car is simply calmer.

Taxis and the airport limousine stands

Pearson's own on-demand taxis and limousines load at the taxi and limo stands outside both terminals, with a dispatcher allocating the next car in line. Fares from the stands are flat rates based on the destination zone rather than a running meter, which is honest and predictable, though you do not know the vehicle or the driver in advance. There is no need to book; you simply join the queue. Our Toronto airport taxi and limo fare guide compares typical fares, and our flat-rate taxi alternative explains what the extra cost of a pre-booked car buys you.

Pre-arranged limos and car services: how the system works

Pre-booked commercial vehicles, including licensed limousines and taxis collecting a named passenger, pick up under Pearson's pre-arranged system. Operators need a valid per-trip service permit from the airport authority. The driver waits off the curb; when the passenger is ready, Pearson's pre-arranged dispatcher calls or texts the driver to proceed to the designated pre-arranged pickup area on the terminal curb, Arrivals level. That is the pickup our fare includes: a chauffeur who pulls up to the pre-arranged area once you are outside with your bags. Pearson also lists a pre-arranged desk inside Terminals 1 and 3 by Door A, where travellers needing accessible vehicles for non-folding mobility aids can check in. Door numbers and desks can move, so your chauffeur confirms the exact spot by text on the day.

How our chauffeur times your pickup

Every airport pickup is tied to your flight number, so dispatch sees the real landing time, not the scheduled one. If your flight is two hours late, your chauffeur is two hours later too, at no charge. Included waiting starts at actual landing: 30 minutes on Canadian domestic and US arrivals and 60 minutes on other international arrivals, then 15-minute blocks if you need longer. The chauffeur stages nearby, watches the arrival, and messages you with their name, vehicle and plate. When you text that you have your bags, they come forward to the pre-arranged pickup area. If you prefer someone inside with a name board, add airport meet and greet at booking, planning figure $25 to $35.

With the meet and greet add-on, your chauffeur waits inside the arrivals hall with a name board

Step by step: from the aircraft door to our car

  1. Switch your phone on as soon as the aircraft is on the ground; our message is usually already waiting.
  2. International passengers clear customs first; domestic passengers go straight to baggage claim.
  3. Collect your bags, then text or WhatsApp the chauffeur with your terminal and door number.
  4. Walk out of the arrivals hall to the Arrivals curb and follow the signs for pre-arranged or commercial pickup.
  5. Look for the vehicle and plate in the message; the chauffeur loads the bags and confirms your name before you get in.

If you added meet and greet, skip steps 3 to 5: your chauffeur is waiting with a name board beyond the arrivals doors and walks you out.

Terminal-by-terminal tips

At Terminal 1, the international and domestic arrivals halls feed onto the same Arrivals level, and the building is long, so give the chauffeur your door letter. At Terminal 3, arrivals are on one level with the doors lettered along the curb; again, the door letter saves time. If you arrive at the wrong terminal (for instance, you connected from a partner airline), use the free Terminal Link train to reach the terminal you told us, or simply tell dispatch and the chauffeur will move. Our Pearson Terminal 1 and Pearson Terminal 3 pages cover the layout in more detail.

What to do if you can't find your chauffeur

Don't wander. Stay at the door you told us, keep your phone on, and follow this order:

  • Re-read the chauffeur's message for the vehicle, colour and plate.
  • Reply to the message or call the chauffeur's number directly.
  • If there is no answer within two minutes, call our 24/7 dispatch; dispatch can see the chauffeur's position and connect you.
  • Check you are at the terminal named in your booking.
  • If your phone has no data, use the free terminal Wi-Fi or ask an airport information desk to call dispatch for you.

Never get into an unmarked car with someone who approaches you in the hall offering a ride. Our chauffeurs know your name and booking details; unlicensed touts do not.

Waiting time, delays and extra charges

Delays in the air are our problem, not yours: flight tracking absorbs them. Delays on the ground are different. If customs takes 50 minutes on an international arrival, you are still inside the 60 minutes of included waiting. If bags are lost and you spend 90 minutes at the baggage office, extra waiting is charged in 15-minute blocks after the included time, and the chauffeur or dispatch will tell you before it starts. Airport fees are already inside the all-in fare, so there is nothing to pay at the curb, and gratuity is included.

Picking up friends yourself: a practical plan

If a friend or relative is collecting you instead, the same logic applies. They should wait in a Free Waiting Area rather than circling the terminal, and only drive in when you text that you are outside with bags. Tell them your terminal and door. Short-term parking at the terminal garages is the alternative if they want to come in and meet you; parking charges apply. Drivers must not stop in a lane marked for commercial or rideshare vehicles, and should never leave a car unattended at the curb.

Groups, big luggage and accessible pickups

A single chauffeur can only load so much at the curb, so groups of seven or more should book a Sprinter van (up to 14 passengers and 14 bags) rather than several sedans that arrive at different times. For ski bags, golf clubs, bikes in boxes or a large stroller, note them at booking so we send an SUV or van with the space. Passengers needing a ramp or lift for a non-folding wheelchair should mention it when booking; those vehicles are arranged through partners and use Pearson's accessible pickup arrangements.

Booking a Pearson pickup that follows the rules

Book online with your flight number, terminal and number of bags, and the reservation engine shows a fixed all-in fare before you confirm: chauffeur, vehicle, fuel, airport fees, 407 tolls if used and gratuity included, HST shown separately. There is no surge after a big arrival bank and no meter. Compare vehicles on the fleet page, fares on the rates page and routes such as Pearson to downtown Toronto.

Public transit from the terminals instead of a car

Not every arrival needs a car. The UP Express platform is connected to Terminal 1, and trains reach Union Station in about 25 minutes; travellers landing at Terminal 3 ride the free Terminal Link train to T1 first. Timetables are on the UP Express site. TTC buses serve both terminals, including the 900 Airport Express to Kipling station and overnight routes; the TTC airport page lists them. Transit is excellent value for a solo traveller with a small bag heading downtown. It is harder with children, several suitcases, a late-night landing or a destination far from a station, which is where a door-to-door private airport shuttle or chauffeured car earns its fare.

Licensing: why the pickup system matters to you

Every vehicle that carries paying passengers from Pearson needs the right municipal licence and, for pre-arranged pickups, the airport's per-trip permit. In Toronto, vehicle-for-hire rules are set by the city (City of Toronto vehicle-for-hire licensing), and Mississauga, where the airport sits, licenses its own operators. The system protects passengers: licensed drivers are screened and insured for commercial use. It also explains why an unlicensed driver cannot legally use the pre-arranged pickup area, and why touts inside the terminal are best ignored. When you book with us, the chauffeur arriving at the curb is the one named in your confirmation.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Where do pre-booked limos pick up at Pearson airport?

Pre-arranged limousines and car services collect passengers at the designated pre-arranged pickup area on the terminal curb, Arrivals level, at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. The driver waits off the curb and is called forward when you are ready. Your chauffeur confirms the exact door by text on the day.

Where is the Uber pickup at Toronto Pearson?

At Terminal 1, rideshare zones are on the Ground Level between Doors P and S. At Terminal 3, they are on the Arrivals level at Doors B and D, split into numbered zones by app. Always follow the zone shown in your app, because Pearson adjusts the layout from time to time.

Is there a cell phone lot at Pearson airport?

Yes. Pearson has two Free Waiting Areas on Network Road in Mississauga, close to both terminals. Drivers can park free for up to 45 minutes but must stay with the vehicle. One lot has EV fast chargers, with normal charging fees. Drive to the terminal only when your passenger has their bags.

Can you wait at the arrivals curb at Pearson?

No. The arrivals curb is for active loading only, and waiting vehicles are moved along by airport staff and enforcement officers. Friends and family should wait in a Free Waiting Area or park in a terminal garage. Pre-booked chauffeurs wait off-site and are called forward by the pre-arranged dispatcher.

How long will my chauffeur wait at Pearson?

With TorontoAirportTransfer.services, included waiting starts at your actual landing time: 30 minutes on Canadian domestic and US arrivals and 60 minutes on other international arrivals. Flight delays cost nothing because we track the flight. After the included time, extra waiting is charged in 15-minute blocks, and you are told before it starts.

Does the driver come inside the terminal at Pearson?

Not by default. The standard fare includes curbside pickup at the pre-arranged pickup area. If you want your chauffeur waiting inside the arrivals hall with a name board, add meet and greet at booking; the planning figure is $25 to $35. It is popular with first-time visitors, families and senior travellers.

What should I do if I can't find my driver at Pearson?

Stay at the door you gave the chauffeur, re-check the vehicle and plate in the message, then call or reply to the chauffeur. If there is no answer, call 24/7 dispatch, which can see the chauffeur's location. Never accept a ride from anyone who approaches you inside the terminal.
