A Detroit airport limo from Toronto is a pre-booked, fixed-fare chauffeured car down Highway 401 and across the Detroit River to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) in Romulus, Michigan. Expect roughly four to four and a half hours of driving from the GTA plus border time. Many travellers from London and Windsor use DTW for its large Delta network.
Detroit airport limo: who uses DTW from Ontario
Detroit Metro is a major connecting hub for Delta, and the airport's official site lists nonstop flights across the US and to Europe and Asia. For southwestern Ontario it is the nearest big American airport: travellers from Windsor, Chatham, Sarnia and London often fly from DTW rather than drive east to Pearson, and some Toronto travellers use it for fares or nonstop routes Pearson does not offer.
From the GTA this is a long transfer, and it is worth doing the arithmetic before booking. A solo traveller saving a small amount on a ticket will rarely come out ahead. A family whose Delta itinerary through Detroit is far cheaper, or a traveller with a very early departure who would otherwise overnight in Windsor, often does. Dispatch will give you a straight answer.
What the fixed fare covers
TorontoAirportTransfer.services quotes one all-in price: chauffeur, vehicle, fuel, the bridge or tunnel toll, 407 tolls when dispatch uses the 407 to clear the GTA, and gratuity, with HST on its own line. The reservation engine shows the exact fare for your address, date and vehicle before you confirm, and nothing changes if the 401 is slow at Woodstock.
There is no published planning band for DTW; the route is roughly 380 km from the Pearson area, so the fare sits well above our Pearson to London band of $445–520 and below the Montreal band of $1,275–1,470. From London or Windsor it is much shorter and priced accordingly. Use the fare calculator or the engine for the exact figure.
The crossings: Gordie Howe, Ambassador Bridge and the tunnel
Three crossings link Windsor and Detroit, and dispatch picks one on the day. The Gordie Howe International Bridge opened to traffic on July 27, 2026, and connects Highway 401 directly to Interstate 75 in Detroit's Delray neighbourhood, so traffic from the 401 no longer threads through Windsor's city streets. For DTW it is usually the most direct choice.
The Ambassador Bridge remains open and carries heavy truck traffic; it lands near Detroit's Mexicantown with access to I-75 and I-96. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel runs from downtown Windsor to downtown Detroit and suits passenger cars; it is handy when you are also collecting someone in central Windsor. Dispatch checks CBP wait times for all three before the chauffeur reaches Tilbury.

The drive down the 401
The run is almost entirely Highway 401: past Milton, Cambridge, Woodstock and London, then the long straight stretch through Chatham-Kent to Windsor. It is flat, fast and exposed. Construction zones between Cambridge and London can add time in summer, and the stretch near Tilbury has a history of sudden fog and whiteouts.
Dispatch plans a comfort stop at a highway service centre on longer runs, usually around London or Chatham; tell us at booking if you would rather push straight through. From the border it is about 30 to 40 minutes to the DTW terminals via I-75 and I-94, depending on the crossing and Detroit traffic.
Documents at the Detroit crossing
The US officer checks documents for everyone in the vehicle. Canadian citizens may use a passport, NEXUS card or enhanced driver's licence at the land border, but carry the passport you will fly with. Permanent residents and other nationals need a passport and whatever US visa or authorization applies; check US Customs and Border Protection in advance.
Children need their own documents, and a single parent travelling with a child should carry a consent letter. Canadians planning to stay in the US for 30 days or more on one trip must be registered, usually by requesting an I-94 at entry. If you plan to request it at the land crossing, tell dispatch so extra time goes into the schedule.
Timing a DTW departure from Toronto
A long drive plus a border crossing plus a hub airport means a generous buffer. DTW has two terminals: McNamara, used by Delta and its partners, and Evans, used by most other airlines. Know which one before the day and tell us at booking.
| Starting point | Typical drive to DTW (clear roads) | Suggested pickup before departure |
|---|---|---|
| Pearson / Mississauga | 4 h – 4 h 30 min plus border | 7–7.5 hours |
| Downtown Toronto | 4 h 15 min – 4 h 45 min plus border | 7.5–8 hours |
| Kitchener-Waterloo / Guelph | 3 h – 3 h 30 min plus border | 6–6.5 hours |
| London | 2 h – 2 h 15 min plus border | 4.5–5 hours |
| Windsor | 30–45 min plus border | 3–3.5 hours |
For an early-morning DTW departure from Toronto, many passengers prefer a night pickup and sleep in the back. Others book an overnight near the airport and a short morning shuttle; dispatch can advise.
Splitting the trip with Windsor or London
The distance lends itself to split arrangements. Some passengers drive themselves to London or Windsor and book us for the last leg; others fly from Toronto to Windsor and cross by car. For southwestern Ontario residents we also run Windsor airport transfers and London airport transfers when a Canadian airport suits the itinerary better.
Families visiting relatives in London, Ontario sometimes combine a stop there with the DTW run: dropping grandparents in London on the way, for example. Multi-stop trips are priced by the reservation engine with each stop entered, so the fare is still fixed before you confirm.
At the DTW curb
The chauffeur drops you at the departures curb of your terminal, at the door nearest your airline, unloads the bags and waits until you are ready. The McNamara Terminal is long, so the right door saves a walk; give us your airline at booking. After a four-hour drive, passengers appreciate going straight from the car to the counter.
If you are booking the return now, the chauffeur confirms the inbound flight number before leaving.

Return pickups from Detroit
On the way home, dispatch tracks your inbound flight and times the chauffeur to the actual landing. A flight arriving from within the US or from Canada includes 30 minutes of waiting from landing; an arrival into DTW from anywhere else abroad includes 60 minutes to clear US customs. After that, waiting is billed in 15-minute blocks. The chauffeur meets you at the terminal's designated commercial pickup area; add meet and greet for a name board inside.
Coming back into Canada at Windsor, the CBSA officer will ask about goods and length of stay. Declare everything and keep receipts together; the CBSA publishes personal exemption limits.
Vehicle choice for a four-hour run
On a long trip, space matters more than on a short airport hop. A business sedan takes three passengers and three bags, fine for business travellers. A first-class sedan adds rear legroom and quiet for a working journey. Families and anyone with a lot of luggage should book the executive SUV or a luxury van, with six seats and six bags.
Groups from a tournament or conference book the Sprinter, which seats fourteen with room for their bags. An SUV runs about 25 to 30 per cent above the sedan fare and a Sprinter about 2.2 times, shared among the group.
Children on a long cross-border drive
Four hours plus a border is a real journey for young children. Infant, convertible and booster seats are provided on request; add them at booking so they are installed before pickup. Whatever the exemptions for taxis and buses, we fit the right child seat for every child who needs one; the province's car seat guide explains the stages. Pack non-fresh snacks, since fresh produce is often refused at US agricultural checks, and plan the comfort stop with the chauffeur. Our child car seat transfers page covers the details.
NEXUS at Windsor and Detroit
All three crossings offer NEXUS processing, but the lanes can be used only when every occupant, chauffeur included, holds NEXUS. If your whole party is enrolled, tell us at booking; dispatch will try to assign a NEXUS-holding chauffeur, and will always plan a regular-lane backup.
Winter on Highway 401
The 401 through Chatham-Kent and Essex County is exposed farmland where snow squalls and blowing snow can drop visibility quickly, and the road has been closed for multi-vehicle collisions in bad winters. Our cars run winter tires, and dispatch checks Ontario and Michigan forecasts and Ontario 511 road reports the day before. Expect a call to move the pickup earlier if weather is coming.
Cancellations follow the sitewide rule from the booked pickup: more than 72 hours out is free; 72 hours or less, 10 per cent; 48 hours or less, 50 per cent; 24 hours or less or a no-show, the full fare.
Overnight options near the airport
For a first-wave morning departure from DTW, some Toronto passengers prefer to travel the afternoon before and sleep at an airport hotel in Romulus, then take the hotel's own shuttle to the terminal. The chauffeur drops you at the hotel entrance, and the fare is the same fixed price as a terminal drop. It removes the risk of a winter night on the 401 and lets you arrive at the counter rested. Families with young children often find this the calmest plan.
On the way home, if your flight lands late in the evening, you can do the reverse: a night in Detroit or Windsor and a morning pickup. Tell dispatch your plan and the engine prices each leg separately, with no waiting charges while you sleep.
Business travel through DTW
Corporate passengers use this run for Detroit-area auto industry meetings as well as flights. A chauffeured car lets you work or take calls on the way, and invoices can go to a company account. Our corporate car service page explains billing, and the long-distance car service page covers other out-of-town runs.
