Toronto Pearson to Manchester is flown non-stop by Air Canada from Terminal 1 and Air Transat from Terminal 3, with more flights in summer than winter. The overnight flight takes about seven hours. Canadians need a UK ETA. Trains link Manchester Airport with Piccadilly in about 15 to 20 minutes. A sedan to Pearson from Brampton is a planning figure of $100–130 all-in before HST.
Manchester is the gateway to the north of England: the city itself, Liverpool, Leeds, the Peak District, the Lake District and a very large community of families with relatives in Ontario. The route from Toronto is smaller and more seasonal than London, which changes how you plan it. For the return leg, when you land back at Pearson, our Manchester arrivals pickup at Pearson page covers terminals, customs and the included waiting. This post covers the outbound trip and the ground at the Manchester end.
Toronto Pearson to Manchester: who flies it and when
Two airlines fly Toronto Pearson to Manchester non-stop: Air Canada and Air Transat. Air Transat is the leisure carrier and typically offers more weekly departures in the summer season; winter frequencies on both carriers are lower, and some weeks may have only a handful of flights. That makes Manchester a route to book early for summer holidays, Christmas visits and school breaks, when family travel fills the aircraft. Check the current schedules on Air Canada and Air Transat before fixing dates, because a single missed departure can cost you days rather than hours.
Which Pearson terminal for a Manchester flight?
The two non-stop carriers use different terminals at Pearson. Air Canada departs from Terminal 1; Air Transat from Terminal 3. Many families have flown one airline one year and the other the next, and go to the wrong building out of habit. The terminals are linked by the free Terminal Link train, but with bags and children that detour eats 20 minutes you did not budget for. Check your booking, then check again with our terminal finder the day before; tell your chauffeur the airline and they will drop you at the right departures curb.
When to leave home for Pearson
Manchester flights generally leave Pearson in the evening. Aim to be at the terminal three hours before departure, because check-in desks for transatlantic flights close earlier than domestic ones and Terminal 3's security gets busy when the European departures cluster. Our how early to arrive at Pearson guide gives margins by time of day. From Brampton or Mississauga (planning figures $100–130 and $90–120 in a business sedan) the drive is short, but from Durham Region or Hamilton you meet the rush hour, so leave earlier.
| Leaving from | Planning fare to Pearson, sedan (+ HST) | Suggested pickup for a 9:00 p.m. flight |
|---|---|---|
| Brampton | $100–130 | about 5:15 p.m. |
| Mississauga | $90–120 | about 5:20 p.m. |
| Oakville | $120–150 | about 5:00 p.m. |
| Hamilton | $195–240 | about 4:30 p.m. |
| Whitby / Oshawa | $220–265 | about 4:00 p.m. |
Pickup times are illustrations for a weekday; dispatch will suggest a time for your flight and address.
Do Canadians need a UK ETA for Manchester?
Yes, exactly as for London. Canadian citizens need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation, which costs £20 and is applied for on GOV.UK. It is linked to your passport, so anyone who has renewed a passport since applying needs a new one. Children need their own. Families visiting grandparents in Stockport or Bolton often forget that a child's passport was renewed; check every document a week before departure. Dual British citizens travel on the British passport and need no ETA.
One-stop options when the non-stops do not fit
If the non-stop is full, not flying on your date or too expensive, the usual one-stop routings connect through London, Dublin, Amsterdam, Paris or Frankfurt. Two tips. First, a connection in Dublin or London can mean a domestic-style arrival in Manchester, which is quick. Second, leave at least two hours for a connection at a large hub, because the transatlantic leg is the one most likely to run late. From Toronto's side the difference is only the terminal you leave from: a KLM or Aer Lingus first leg usually goes from Terminal 3, a Lufthansa or Air Canada first leg from Terminal 1.

The flight and the morning arrival
The eastbound flight is about seven hours, landing at Manchester in the morning, five hours ahead of Toronto for most of the year and four for a few weeks in spring and around the end of October. Sleep on board, drink water, and plan a quiet first day. Manchester Airport has three terminals; the airline decides which one you land at, and the Manchester Airport website shows where each carrier operates. After UK Border Force, where adults and older children with Canadian ePassports can usually use the eGates, collect bags and walk through customs.
Manchester Airport into the city
The airport has its own railway station, linked to the terminals by a covered walkway. Frequent trains run to Manchester Piccadilly in about 15 to 20 minutes, and many continue to other northern cities. The Metrolink tram also serves the airport and runs into the city centre on a slower, cheaper route with more stops. Transport for Greater Manchester publishes tram times and fares at TfGM; train times are on the National Rail planner. Taxis wait at each terminal. If relatives are collecting you by car, agree which terminal and car park first, because the airport's roads are one-way and confusing.
Onward from Manchester
- Liverpool: trains from the airport and from Manchester city centre, roughly an hour.
- Leeds and Yorkshire: direct trains from the airport station.
- The Lake District: trains towards Oxenholme and Windermere, or a hire car on the M6.
- The Peak District: under an hour's drive south-east.
- Scotland: trains from Manchester to Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Buying rail tickets in advance usually saves money on longer journeys; walk-up fares on some routes are high.
Weather and packing for the north of England
Northern England is milder than Toronto in winter and cooler in summer, and it rains often, year round. Pack a waterproof jacket in every season. Toronto families visiting at Christmas are often surprised that snow is rare while dampness is constant. In July, Manchester may be 20 degrees when Toronto is 30. For the ride to Pearson in winter, check Ontario 511 and the Environment Canada forecast; a snowy evening on Highway 410 can add half an hour to the drive.
Coming back: the westbound flight
Flights from Manchester to Toronto usually leave late morning or around midday and land at Pearson in the afternoon. Before leaving Manchester, add the return flight number to your Pearson pickup booking. Our chauffeur tracks the flight, waits at the commercial pickup area of your terminal, and includes 60 minutes of waiting from landing for customs and bags. On the way back, declare food gifts at Canadian customs, and use the optional Advance Declaration in ArriveCAN to save time at the kiosks.
Families with big luggage
The Manchester route carries a lot of family travel, and family travel means luggage: presents going out, more presents coming back, a pram and a car seat. A business sedan takes three passengers and three bags; an executive SUV or luxury van takes six and six, at roughly 25 to 30 per cent more than the sedan fare. For a larger family group a Sprinter carries 14 with 14 bags. Child seats are on request, free or about $10–15 each, added at booking; see child car seat transfers. One right-sized vehicle is cheaper and calmer than two small ones.

Older relatives travelling alone
Many Manchester passengers are grandparents flying out to see family, or home again, on their own. For the Toronto end, meet and greet puts the chauffeur inside the arrivals hall with a name board, a planning figure of $25–35; for the outbound trip, the chauffeur will walk them to the check-in desk if asked. Airline assistance, including wheelchairs through security and to the gate, must be booked with the airline directly, ideally at least 48 hours in advance. Our airport meet and greet page describes exactly what the chauffeur does.
Football, festivals and peak weeks
Manchester's own calendar affects the route too. Home matches at Old Trafford and the Etihad fill city hotels and trains on weekends through the football season, and big concerts do the same in summer. If your visit coincides, book hotels and rail tickets well ahead. At the Toronto end, the busiest outbound weeks are the start of the school summer holidays, the week before Christmas and the Easter break, when flights to the UK are full and every airport car in the GTA is in demand. Book your Pearson ride when you book the flight; with free cancellation more than 72 hours out, there is no reason to wait.
A typical family timeline, Mississauga to Manchester
Two parents and two children leave Mississauga at 5:20 p.m. in an executive SUV with a booster seat fitted, reach Terminal 3 at about 5:50 p.m. for a 9:00 p.m. Air Transat departure, check in four cases and eat before security. They land in Manchester at about 9:00 a.m. local time, clear the eGates and baggage hall by 10:00, and take the train to Piccadilly, where grandparents meet them. Three weeks later the flight home lands at Pearson mid-afternoon, and the same SUV booking, tracked against the flight, has them home in time for dinner.
Money and phones in Manchester
The UK uses pounds sterling; contactless card payment is accepted almost everywhere, including trams and most trains. Canadian credit cards work, but check foreign transaction fees before you go. Most Canadian phone plans offer a UK roaming add-on; a local eSIM is often cheaper for a long stay. Tipping in the UK is lighter than in Canada: around 10 to 12.5 per cent in restaurants, often added as a service charge, and rarely expected in pubs.
