Toronto to Newark airport is about 90 minutes in the air. Air Canada and United fly from Pearson Terminal 1, and Porter flies from Billy Bishop. Both Toronto airports have US preclearance, so you land at Newark as a domestic passenger. Arrive three hours before departure. Driving takes eight to nine hours; a private sedan is planned like New York City, $2,175–2,550 all-in before HST.
Newark Liberty International sits in New Jersey, across the Hudson from Manhattan, and it is often the easiest New York-area airport for Midtown, Jersey City, Hoboken and New Jersey offices. From Toronto you can fly there from two airports or drive the whole way. This post compares the options. For travellers flying the other direction, our New York to Toronto Pearson arrivals page covers landing at Pearson from JFK, LaGuardia or Newark.
Toronto to Newark airport: who flies it
From Toronto Pearson, Air Canada and United fly non-stop to Newark, both from Terminal 1. United uses Newark as one of its main hubs, so its flights also suit onward connections across the United States and beyond. From Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, on the Toronto Island, Porter flies non-stop to Newark. Schedules change by season and by day of the week, so check the airline for your date. Frequencies are usually highest on weekday mornings and early evenings, reflecting the business traffic on the route.
Pearson or Billy Bishop?
Billy Bishop is the downtown option: about 10 minutes from the Financial District, small, quick to get through and reached by a short tunnel from the foot of Bathurst Street. Pearson has more flights, more airlines and bigger aircraft, and is better for travellers coming from the suburbs or connecting onward. From Mississauga, Brampton or Vaughan, Pearson is closer. From Bay Street, Billy Bishop usually wins on door-to-door time. Our Billy Bishop airport transfer page explains the drop-off on Eireann Quay, and the sibling post on Billy Bishop to New York goes deeper.
US preclearance: at both Toronto airports
Pearson has long had US Customs and Border Protection preclearance, and since March 2026 Billy Bishop has too; see Billy Bishop's preclearance page. You clear US immigration, customs and agriculture checks in Toronto before boarding, then land at Newark as a domestic passenger and walk straight out. That is the biggest advantage of flying: the border is done before the flight, not in a long queue at the other end. Canadian citizens need a valid passport or NEXUS card; others should check requirements with US Customs and Border Protection.
How early to arrive for a Newark flight
Because preclearance adds a US border check to the usual check-in and security, plan to be at the terminal about three hours before departure at Pearson; Porter also recommends three hours at Billy Bishop. NEXUS members often move faster, but do not count on it at peak times. From downtown Toronto, that means a pickup around three and a half hours before a weekday afternoon flight to Pearson. Our how early to arrive at Pearson guide sets out margins by terminal and time of day.
| Option | Door-to-door from downtown Toronto | Cost pattern | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fly from Pearson (Air Canada, United) | About 5–6 hours to Midtown | Airfare plus two ground transfers | Suburban travellers, onward connections |
| Fly from Billy Bishop (Porter) | About 4.5–5.5 hours to Midtown | Airfare plus two short transfers | Downtown offices |
| Private car the whole way | About 8–9 hours plus the border | Sedan planning figure $2,175–2,550 | Groups, lots of luggage, no-fly passengers |
| Drive to Buffalo, fly from there | About 6–7 hours | Transfer plus airfare | Occasional fare savings |
Getting from Newark Airport into Manhattan
Newark's AirTrain links the terminals to the Newark Liberty International Airport rail station on the Northeast Corridor, where NJ Transit and Amtrak trains run to New York Penn Station in about half an hour. Timetables are on NJ Transit and the airport authority's Newark Airport site. By car or taxi, Midtown is usually 35 to 60 minutes, much longer in the evening peak through the Lincoln or Holland tunnels. For Jersey City, Hoboken or offices in New Jersey, a car is often simpler than the train.

Driving from Toronto to Newark
The drive is roughly 800 km and takes eight to nine hours plus the border wait. The usual routes cross at the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie or the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, then run east across upstate New York on the Thruway before turning south through Pennsylvania or the Southern Tier to Interstate 80 into New Jersey. Check border wait times before choosing a crossing; the Peace Bridge and Niagara Falls Bridge Commission sites post them. A private car suits groups, people with lots of luggage, or travellers who cannot fly. Our cross-border limo to the USA page explains how the border works in a chauffeured car.
What a private car to Newark costs
Newark is priced like the New York City run: a business sedan is a planning figure of $2,175–2,550 all-in before HST, including chauffeur, fuel, tolls and gratuity. An executive SUV or luxury van is roughly 25 to 30 per cent more, and a Sprinter about 2.2 times the sedan fare, which can make the road competitive for a group of eight to twelve compared with airfares plus transfers at both ends. The reservation engine quotes the exact address and date. The Toronto to New York City route page has the driving detail.
Drive to Buffalo and fly from there?
Some travellers drive to Buffalo Niagara International Airport and fly to Newark from the US side, especially when Toronto fares are high. A business sedan from Pearson to Buffalo airport is a planning figure of $390–480. You cross the land border in the car rather than using preclearance, then fly as a domestic passenger. It rarely saves time, but it can save money for a family on a fare sale. See Toronto to Buffalo airport for the route and border timing.
Business travellers: timing a same-day return
A day trip to Newark or Midtown is possible and common. Take a morning flight, land before 10 a.m., and return on an early-evening flight. The return flight lands at Pearson or Billy Bishop as an international arrival, because you clear Canadian customs in Toronto; with us, 30 minutes of waiting from landing is included, and you can add more at booking. For a Bay Street office, Billy Bishop cuts the ground time at both ends. Put both flight numbers in one booking so the chauffeur tracks the evening return without another phone call.
Families and groups
For a family of five with bags, the ground legs cost more than people expect: an SUV to Pearson, a large taxi or car service at Newark, and the same in reverse. Compare that with a single Sprinter door to door for eight to twelve people, which also avoids baggage fees and the airport entirely. For smaller families, flying is still faster. Add child seats at booking for the Toronto legs, on request, free or about $10–15 each. Ontario's car seat guidance explains which seat each child needs.
Hotels near Newark, or in Manhattan?
Where you sleep changes which ground option makes sense. For an early meeting in Newark, Jersey City or an office park along the New Jersey Turnpike, an airport hotel or a hotel near Newark Penn Station saves the Hudson crossing twice. For Midtown or the Financial District, the train from the airport to New York Penn Station, then the subway, avoids the worst of the tunnel traffic. Travellers with heavy bags or late arrivals often book a car at the New York end, just as they would book one in Toronto. Whatever you choose, allow for the evening peak: the approaches to the Lincoln and Holland tunnels can add an hour between 4 and 7 p.m.
A timeline for a morning Porter flight
- 6:20 a.m. Pickup at a King West condo; the drive to Eireann Quay takes about 10 minutes.
- 6:35 a.m. Walk through the pedestrian tunnel to the island terminal.
- 6:40 a.m. Check-in, security and US preclearance.
- 9:30 a.m. Departure to Newark.
- 11:00 a.m. Land at Newark as a domestic passenger; no immigration queue.
- 11:15 a.m. AirTrain to the rail station, train to New York Penn Station.
- 12:00 p.m. In Midtown for a lunch meeting.
For a flight from Pearson, add the longer drive and the bigger terminal: most downtown passengers leave home about 30 to 45 minutes earlier than for Billy Bishop.
Checking bags, liquids and security
At preclearance you carry your bags through US customs, so leave time. US security rules on liquids apply on the flight, and the TSA site lists what can go in carry-on bags. Declare any food you bring into the US at the preclearance desk; fresh fruit and meat are common problems. If you have Global Entry or NEXUS, use the dedicated kiosks and lanes where they are open.

Winter and summer disruptions
Newark is one of the most delay-prone airports in the northeast, especially during summer thunderstorms and winter storms, when ground delays hold flights in Toronto. A delay at the gate is annoying; a delay after you have already cleared preclearance means you wait airside. For the return, flight tracking protects you: your Toronto chauffeur follows the actual arrival, not the schedule. Check Ontario 511 before driving to Pearson in snow.
Mistakes to avoid on the Toronto to Newark trip
- Arriving at Pearson 90 minutes before a Newark flight as if it were domestic; preclearance needs the extra time.
- Booking a car to the wrong Toronto airport: Porter's Newark flights leave from Billy Bishop, not Pearson.
- Forgetting that Newark is in New Jersey; a hotel "near the airport" can be an hour from Midtown at rush hour.
- Carrying fresh fruit into preclearance, which US agriculture officers will take.
- Planning a road trip without checking border wait times, which can add an hour or more on summer weekends.
Which option should you choose?
- One or two people, downtown office: Porter from Billy Bishop.
- Travellers from the suburbs or connecting onward on United: Pearson Terminal 1.
- A family or group with lots of luggage: compare flying with a Sprinter door to door.
- Someone who cannot or will not fly: a private car, planned as a full-day trip.
- Price-sensitive and flexible: check fares from Buffalo, adding the transfer.
Book the Toronto ground legs through the reservation engine: fixed fare, flight tracked, cancellation free more than 72 hours before pickup, then 10, 50 and 100 per cent at 72, 48 and 24 hours or less.
