The main bus from London to Toronto airport is the Robert Q Airbus, a scheduled shuttle that runs several times a day between designated stops in London and Pearson. VIA Rail to Union Station plus UP Express is the rail alternative. A private car, planning figure $445–520 for a sedan, collects you at home and takes about two to two and a half hours.
If you are searching for a bus from London to Toronto airport, this post compares every option on a real travel day. For the private service itself, including fares by vehicle and the 401 route, see our London, Ontario to Pearson limousine service page. Here we look at the Robert Q Airbus, the train, the coaches and the car side by side.
What is the Robert Q Airbus?
The Robert Q Airbus is a London-based scheduled airport shuttle that runs between Southwestern Ontario and Toronto Pearson, and also serves Detroit Metro airport. It operates several departures a day in each direction, with the first leaving London very early for morning flights and the last arriving back late in the evening.
It picks up and drops off only at its designated service locations, not at home addresses along the way. Fares, times and stop locations are published on the Robert Q booking site; check them for your date, because schedules and prices change. For a solo traveller heading to Pearson, it is the most direct scheduled option from London.
Are there other buses from London to Pearson?
Intercity carriers such as FlixBus run London–Toronto services, and some timetables include a Pearson stop while others finish downtown. Check each departure's stop list before buying, because a downtown arrival means a further transfer to the airport with your luggage.
The practical difference from the Airbus is that general intercity coaches are built around city-to-city travel, while an airport shuttle's schedule is designed around flight times. For the airport, the dedicated shuttle is usually the better scheduled choice.
How do the options compare door to door?
| Option | Board at | Typical time to Pearson | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Robert Q Airbus | designated London stop | longer than a car; see the published schedule | loaded by driver | solo or couple, budget |
| Intercity coach | downtown stop | varies; check for airport stop | you load | budget, light bags |
| VIA Rail + UP Express | London station | about 2 h to Union + 25 min UP + transfer | you carry at Union | solo, heading downtown |
| Private car | your door | about 2–2.5 h | chauffeur loads | families, groups, early or late flights |
Shuttle and rail times vary by departure; check VIA Rail and the operators' sites. The UP Express runs from Union to Terminal 1 in about 25 minutes.
What does the private car cost compared with shuttle seats?
Our planning figures for London to Pearson, all-in with fuel, 407 tolls if used, airport fees and gratuity, plus HST: $445–520 for a business sedan carrying up to three; about $555–675 for an executive SUV or luxury van carrying up to six; about $975–1,140 for a 14-seat Sprinter.
Shuttle seats are priced per person, so the sums are easy to run. One traveller will pay much less on the shuttle. For a family of four, four shuttle seats plus getting to the stop can approach the price of a sedan or SUV that collects everybody at the front door. Your London street address gets a fixed, all-in price in the reservation engine before you commit.
The Western student arriving for the first time
An international student landing at Pearson from Delhi at 9 p.m. in late August, heading to residence at Western, faces a long night. The shuttle is a sensible budget option if the schedule works: find the pickup point at the terminal, wait for the next departure and ride to the London stop, then get a taxi to residence.
If the flight is late and the last shuttle has gone, the options narrow to an airport hotel or a car. Several students on the same flight can share a car, with the chauffeur tracking the flight and waiting 60 minutes after an international landing at no charge. Our guide to arriving in Canada at Pearson explains customs and the arrivals hall.

The family of four flying to Orlando
A family in Byron with two children, four cases and a 7 a.m. flight needs to be at Pearson around 5 a.m. That means leaving London at about 2:45 a.m. The first shuttle may work, but it means getting two sleepy children and four cases to the stop, and it requires four seats.
A sedan fits three passengers, so this family needs an executive SUV. Car seats are fitted on request and added at booking; our child car seat transfers page explains the options. The chauffeur loads everything at the door and the children can sleep most of the way on the 401.
The medical conference in Toronto
A physician from London Health Sciences travelling to a conference near Pearson, then flying to Vancouver two days later, has a split trip. The train to Union suits the downtown part, but a conference at an airport-area hotel is easier by car. A car also means the flight leg starts from the hotel door.
For two-leg trips like this, book an hourly chauffeur for the busy day or separate point-to-point legs. Our corporate car service handles regular business travel with invoicing.
Pearson or Detroit for London travellers?
London sits roughly halfway between Pearson and Detroit Metro (DTW), and the Robert Q Airbus serves both. Detroit can make sense for US domestic flights priced for the American market, but it means a border crossing at Windsor, American parking or a long return, and US entry requirements for everyone in the car.
Pearson has the larger international network and no border on the way. For a comparison of Detroit trips, see our Detroit airport page and the Detroit Metro airport site. Many London families fly long-haul from Pearson and US sun routes from Detroit, and we run private cars to both.
Why is the car quicker than the shuttle?
The shuttle stops at several designated locations and keeps to a published schedule with buffer built in. It also cannot switch routes on the day. A private chauffeur drives from your door on the 401, and near Milton can switch to the tolled 407 when the 401 through Mississauga is jammed, with the toll already in the fare.
The difference is modest late at night and larger at rush hour. Check the scheduled arrival against your airline's check-in deadline and add a margin for traffic, whichever mode you choose.
When is VIA Rail the right answer?
VIA Rail between London and Toronto is comfortable and lets you work. It is the right answer for a light traveller going to downtown Toronto first, or catching a mid-afternoon flight. The downside for the airport is the change at Union Station: walk from the VIA platforms to the UP Express, then ride 25 minutes to Terminal 1. For Terminal 3, add the free Terminal Link train.
Our post on UP Express from Union to Pearson vs a car covers the Toronto end. With children or heavy bags, the change is where the rail option loses its appeal.
Mistakes London travellers make
- Booking a coach that ends downtown when you need the airport.
- Missing the last shuttle after a delayed international arrival.
- Not counting everyone when comparing shuttle seats with a car fare.
- Forgetting the terminal. Check whether your airline uses Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 with our terminal finder.
- Underestimating winter. Whiteouts between London and Woodstock can close the 401.
Winter on the 401 west of Toronto
The open farmland between London, Ingersoll and Woodstock is exposed to lake-effect snow off Lake Huron, and conditions can change within minutes. Shuttles and coaches continue in most weather but slow down. The train is the most weather-resistant option.
A private chauffeur checks Ontario 511 and Environment Canada forecasts the evening before. If a storm is forecast, dispatch will call to move the pickup earlier. That flexibility is the main reason many London travellers book a car for winter flights even when they take the shuttle in summer.

Coming home: Pearson to London
On the way home, the shuttle requires finding its pickup point and waiting for the next scheduled departure. If your flight is late, you wait longer. The train requires UP Express and VIA, if you land before the last train.
A pre-booked chauffeur is in position by the time you have your bags. The chauffeur tracks the flight and includes 60 minutes of waiting after an international landing, 30 minutes after a Canadian or US one. You are met curbside at the pre-arranged commercial area as standard; an arrivals-hall meet and greet costs extra.
Pickups across London and Middlesex
The shuttle serves designated stops, so households in Byron, Lambeth, Hyde Park, Masonville or Old South still need to get to one. Travellers from St. Thomas, Strathroy, Komoka, Dorchester, Ilderton or Ingersoll have further to go. For them, the real comparison is not shuttle against car, but shuttle-plus-lift against car.
A private car collects from any address in London or the surrounding towns, and the reservation engine prices each one exactly. Addresses east of the city, such as Dorchester or Thamesford, sit slightly closer to Pearson; those west of the city, such as Komoka, a little further. The chauffeur joins the 401 at the nearest interchange.
One trip, four ways: a worked example
A London couple flying from Pearson to Calgary at 1:30 p.m. on a Tuesday could:
- Take a mid-morning Airbus from the nearest designated stop, arriving with ample margin.
- Take an early VIA train to Union, then the UP Express to Terminal 1.
- Drive themselves and park for a week at Pearson.
- Book a sedan at about 9:15 a.m., arriving about 11:30 a.m.
For this daytime flight, the shuttle is excellent value. Move the flight to 6:30 a.m. and the balance shifts towards the car.
